School Dental Health Program

To protect, promote and improve the health of our community

MCHD Dental EducationGood dental health habits in our children can give them a lifetime of better health. Unfortunately, in Kentucky, we rank nearly last for good oral health. Many adults have untreated dental decay, and we have the third highest rate of adult toothlessness in the nation. Tooth decay in children can lead to serious infections. Pain and infection from decay can cause problems with eating. It can also cause difficulty with speech and learning. A smile damaged by decay can cause a child to feel self-conscious about his or her appearance.

In many cases, tooth problems can be prevented. Daily flossing, brushing twice day and regular dental visits are important. Other habits can also influence dental health. Sugary drinks damage the enamel and increase the risk for cavities. Limiting between meal snacks and choosing water are good habits for everyone.

We provide services through Brighter Futures, Brighter Smiles, a dental health program for the Madison County public school system. Our mission is to improve and promote oral health through education and preventative care. Our fluoride varnish and dental sealants programs are free to any Head Start, Pre School, Kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd or 5th grade student in the Madison County Public School system. The program also helps students who need treatment for dental problems.

Fluoride Varnish Program

Fluoride Varnish is painted on the teeth and helps harden the enamel to prevent cavities. Fluoride varnish is provided for children in Head Start, preschool, kindergarten, second, third and fifth grade. This is a free service. It is very easy and takes only minutes. Kentucky law KRS 156.160.1.i now requires proof of a dental screening or examination by a dentist, dental hygienist, physician, registered nurse, advanced nurse practitioner or physician assistant. This proof must be presented to the school no later than January 1 of the first year that a five or six-year-old is enrolled in public school. The kindergarten fluoride varnish service will satisfy the dental screening requirement for public school entry.

Dental Sealants

Happy ToothHappy ToothSealants are plastic-like coatings painted on the back teeth to help prevent decay. It is very easy to do and lasts for a long time. Our sealantprogram now includes second, third and fifth grade students.
